Opening sequence of Phantom of the Opera analysis !!! (;




The opening sequence of the phantom of the opera starts with the name of the production company which is universal and its well known feature which is the earth lighting up with the name of the company routing around it and then the entertainment company which is Odeyssey Entertainment Company. Then it fades out to black which can suggest that the movie will start. The titles then come on, with the background color in black and the titles are in orangey gold-ish color which can suggest that the movie has a sense of mystery, and spooky. The music in the back ground is spooky, eerie, scary and ominous which can suggest that the movie is mysterious but kind of royal because of the color gold. The candle can also symbolize the time in which the movie was set and then the title reveals the name of the film - making the audience thinking or acknowledge the storyline of the movie. The titles are written in an ancient writing which can show the time in which the movie was set. Then the camera zooms through the name and a picture emerges in black and white with a title of ‘Paris 1919’ and a grand theater – the picture then slowly turns into real life.

The setting in the theatre and the atmosphere is a bit foggy and this creates a sense of mystery and fear of what will happen. Then a horse and cart crosses the camera and stops with the sign and this can suggest that the person in the cart in royal or the audience will think that he has something to do will the theatre. In the background as the lady and the driver walks the royal person into the theatre, leaves and foggy are in the air which can suggest that it’s a storm and that something bad will happen – pathetic fallacy. Then the camera moves upwards to reveal why the people are going into the theatre – because it’s on auction for sale. Then the camera pans and we get a look inside the place which is full of dust and spider webs which can show that the place hasn’t been used for a long time with a sound bridge of the person selling the place. Then the lady sees the person in the wheelchair and the music starts to go eerie and spooky and this can suggest that something is about to happen.

Then the camera moves to a close up of the doll about to be sold off and the person in the wheelchair buys it and the camera focuses on it and this suggest that this item is important and it suddenly starts to whisper things to his new owner suggest that its haunted or the phantom is speaking. Then the person selling the stuff talks about the chandelier and then reveals it with a sudden music of orchestral and majestic suggest that it is royal and then the theatre suddenly turns into a real theatre with the colors of gold and red suggesting that its royal and very expensive and its only for people who are rich and the statues can suggest that something is not right with the theatre. Then the camera moves to the exterior of the theatre and the titles of ‘Paris 1870’ with the people coming in and out of it. Then the horse and a cart emerge and them stops with two rich men coming out of it looking very happy and astonished. Then the camera cuts by a pan and shows the audience the inside of the theatre to make them imagine the place with all the actors getting ready from the orchestra to the actors to the people in the backstage etc. 

Then the camera cuts to a man outside riding a cart and a house coming to the theatre and crosses a sign showing the play for tonight in the theatre which is ‘Opera Populaire’ by la Carlotta suggesting that she will be the main protagonist. Then the camera cuts to La Carlotta practicing her lines and warming up her voice for singing opera. Then the camera pans the theatre showing how gorgeous the place is and how royal and expensive it is. The colors used are orange, red, gold and yellow suggesting that it’s royal and expensive and for people who are rich and shows that the theatre is full of life.
