Faya! (:
On Friday 13 January 2012 we wanted to film our opening sequence but due to some of our group members not being available we had to cancel it. We will be re-filming on Friday 20 January 2012. This taught me that planning and organising in advance, would help me and my group to prevent any other cancellation.
Faya! (:
During the weekend, we went out and looked for different locations and at the end chose the suitable location. We also started planning what we will be doing and when and where.
Faya! (:
Today our group started doing the story boarding for the opening sequence and everyone has understood his/her role in the group and who will be acting and/or bring the equipment to the location.

Our First Meeting!!! (;
First we chose who will be in our group then we all thought of different ideas from different genres and at the end of the meeting we all chose and finalised our idea and all of our group members really liked it. We also consulted the teacher and she gave us advice on our idea and guidance.
Preliminary Task "Feed the Fish".!!
After watching the preliminary task, I think that we should’ve used a tripod because the camera moves a lot which makes the film seem unprofessional and a bit rushed. The storyline was about two friends meeting up and then deciding to go shopping after a small conversation about between them involving Olivia’s new pets which are fish and if she feed them or not. However, I think that this doesn’t seem to be clear because of the setting/ location, I think that if I had the chance of doing this task again, I will chose a more suitable location for example a café out of school e.g. Costa or starbucks. And I think that we should have a close up of what Fay was doing on the phone and may be put a cup of tea on the table to show that it’s in a café and a close up of the watch to show that Fay is waiting for Olivia to come because it’s not really clear.
I think that the editing is very good from scene to scene but I will change the zoom shot to a tracking, over the shoulder shot to show where Olivia is going and maybe change the order of the shots for example I will have a shot of Fay texting then a shot of Olivia coming down the stairs then back to Fay then back to Olivia until she comes out of the building. Between the tracking shot and the over the shoulder shot I think that we should’ve had a medium close up of Fays face to show her reaction then a reverse shot of Olivia’s reaction face. I think that both characters must be on the same enthusiasm because Fay seems more excited to meet Olivia and talking about the fish then Olivia. And instead of a high angle shot of Olivia I will have a reaction medium close up shot to show the relationship between the two characters.
In this part the editing was a bit messy and jumpy so I will re-look the film and cut the shots in the right place. The way that Fay talks suggests that she has the script in her hands and she’s reading it, so it doesn’t really flow nicely. The rule of 180 degrees is broken and this confuses the audience, so next time I will take the rule into consideration and I won’t break it.
However on the positive side, I really liked the colors in the frame because it’s really colorful and adds a bit of joy which suggests our storyline which is two teenagers going out and shopping. The picture frame used was very nice because it shows which character is more dominate.
Furthermore, the editing of the first half is really nice and it really flows well. I think that Fay’s character adds a bit of humor to the preliminary task because instead of saying did you feed the fish? She said did you feed the fishies? which is funny and light hearted which can also suggest the storyline. I also really liked how the preliminary sequence fades in at the beginning and how it fades out at the end.

Information about our selected Genre!! - Horror/Thriller o:
Horror films are a movie genre seeking to provoke a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's most primal fears. They often feature scenes that astonish the viewer through the means of ghoulish and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horrors also overlap with the thriller genre. Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden worst fears, revulsions and fear of the unknown.
Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, if some films contain a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak and they may be termed “horror”.Plots written within the horror genre often involve the interruption of an evil force, event, or celebrity, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Themes or elements often prevalent in typical horror films include ghosts, torture, gore, werewolves, ancient curses, Satanism, demons, vicious animals, vampires, cannibals, haunted houses, zombies and serial killers. Conversely, stories of the supernatural are not necessarily always a horror movie as well.

Opening sequence of Se7en analysis!!! (;
The opening sequence of se7en starts with a menacing and eerieing music which suggests that the film is scary and maybe comes under the genre of a thriller. The book also creates enigma in the audience which means that it makes the audience think and ask questions which makes them want to continue watching the movie and this creates and builds up tension. Then the production company is introduced with black background which suggests that the film director wants the audience to pay attention to the production company.
The lighting used is so powerful and the shadows created can suggest that something is hidden and maybe that the film has important secrets that are about to be revealed. Throughout this sequence the music plays in the background to build tension. We are introduced to the characters and the camera crew etc and still the music is in the background with flash backs some person outing a knife like objects and cutting his flesh from his finger. I think that the music used is amazing and very scary which makes the audience sit on the edge of the chair and wanting to find out what’s the movie about due to the flash backs between the titles.
The type of title font used suggests that the movie is intense and that chilling which can also suggest the genre which is a thriller/horror. The flash backs can suggest that this person is a spy and collects evidence and puts them in a book. Or maybe that he is a serial killer and hunts people down and then kills them. The music is so ominous that you start making thinks up as you go along because you really to know that will happen. The books can also suggest that this person is writing diaries etc. the backwards and forwards of the camera and the titles can suggest something to do with mental issues or maybe something to do with haunted people or houses etc. the flash backs can also suggest that this person is a photographer about of all the photos and the equipment etc. as you get to the end of the opening sequence the music gets louder which builds up the tension and creates severe enigma.
The colors can suggest the storyline because all the colors are black, white or red suggesting mysteries and death etc. towards the end the cutting and the editing starts to become more jumpy and sudden creating tension and enigma. I really like the ending because it’s very sudden then fades slowly suggesting that the movie will start.

Opening sequence of Apocalypse Now analysis!!! (;
The opening sequence of Apocalypse Now starts with an extreme long shot of palm trees with smoke rising up from below. All of this is happening with a sound bridge of a helicopter. Then a helicopter passes the camera. All of this can suggest that the scene is set in a war zone or something bad will happen. The music in the background is rolling and insistent which can suggest that something will happen but not sure if it’s bad or good. This scene stays for about 2 minutes. Then suddenly a helicopter again passes and all the trees are blown up by bombs and the whole scene turns into orangey and blue and this can suggest that it’s in a war zone. While all of this is happening in the background the music has lyrics and it starts off with ‘this is the end….’ This can suggest that something bad will happen and that people will die etc and the camera pans to show the demolish of the place.
Then the camera fades into too scenes in one with one half a face of a person looking worried and sad or day dreaming and the other half with the palm trees burning and the helicopters flying and fire etc. this can suggest that the person which is the main protagonist is day dreaming because you can see a fan and him lying on something. The music has some military notes, repetition and insistent and this can show that the atmosphere is very busy and scary. The camera also moves in different angles suggesting that the person is confused and worried with the fire and helicopters in the background. Then the other person is seen sleeping which can suggest that he was dreaming and/or the audience can think that the person maybe was in the military or something to do with that.
Drugs and alcohol is also seen which can show that maybe the two men were day dreaming etc. then the camera cuts to one of the men waking up to the sound of a helicopter and he first thought that it was has fan – creating a sense of confusion in the audience. Then he looks through the window to find nothing, no sound of any helicopter then he realizes that he was just dreaming and imagining himself in the place. We then get introduced to the person and his life – we found out that he used to live in a war zone and that he divorced his wife. And that’s why he is drinking, to make him forget his past and move on but he can’t, he wants to be there instead of here.
Throughout the movie sequence you can see fade over’s and continuity editing. The lighting used also suggests that there is a sense of darkness or mystery about to be resolved. A lot of shadows can be seen suggesting that the character just wants to be left alone and hidden or he wants to go back to the jungle.

Opening sequence of Phantom of the Opera analysis !!! (;
The opening sequence of the phantom of the opera starts with the name of the production company which is universal and its well known feature which is the earth lighting up with the name of the company routing around it and then the entertainment company which is Odeyssey Entertainment Company. Then it fades out to black which can suggest that the movie will start. The titles then come on, with the background color in black and the titles are in orangey gold-ish color which can suggest that the movie has a sense of mystery, and spooky. The music in the back ground is spooky, eerie, scary and ominous which can suggest that the movie is mysterious but kind of royal because of the color gold. The candle can also symbolize the time in which the movie was set and then the title reveals the name of the film - making the audience thinking or acknowledge the storyline of the movie. The titles are written in an ancient writing which can show the time in which the movie was set. Then the camera zooms through the name and a picture emerges in black and white with a title of ‘Paris 1919’ and a grand theater – the picture then slowly turns into real life.
The setting in the theatre and the atmosphere is a bit foggy and this creates a sense of mystery and fear of what will happen. Then a horse and cart crosses the camera and stops with the sign and this can suggest that the person in the cart in royal or the audience will think that he has something to do will the theatre. In the background as the lady and the driver walks the royal person into the theatre, leaves and foggy are in the air which can suggest that it’s a storm and that something bad will happen – pathetic fallacy. Then the camera moves upwards to reveal why the people are going into the theatre – because it’s on auction for sale. Then the camera pans and we get a look inside the place which is full of dust and spider webs which can show that the place hasn’t been used for a long time with a sound bridge of the person selling the place. Then the lady sees the person in the wheelchair and the music starts to go eerie and spooky and this can suggest that something is about to happen.
Then the camera moves to a close up of the doll about to be sold off and the person in the wheelchair buys it and the camera focuses on it and this suggest that this item is important and it suddenly starts to whisper things to his new owner suggest that its haunted or the phantom is speaking. Then the person selling the stuff talks about the chandelier and then reveals it with a sudden music of orchestral and majestic suggest that it is royal and then the theatre suddenly turns into a real theatre with the colors of gold and red suggesting that its royal and very expensive and its only for people who are rich and the statues can suggest that something is not right with the theatre. Opening sequence of Constantine analysis!!! (;
The opening sequence starts with the name of the film ‘Constantine. The title and the background are grey and black and this can suggest that it’s a dark, scary and mysterious film. The lights start in one side of the screen then moves to the other side creating shadows and this can suggest a mysterious, scary atmosphere for the audience. The music is menacing and ominous which can suggest that the movie is scary and strange then the music stops then the scene fades into black then the scene opens with a kitchen window and in the background you can hear the sound of a kettle on with smoke coming out of it suggesting that it’s finished boiling. This can show that something it about to happen because of the sound the kettle makes. The setting is in an apartment in Los Angeles is also clearly shown because of the opening scene and this can set the audience.
Then a lady comes and turns the kettle off and in the background you can hear the radio on – in this scene the camera is tracking backwards – to show the audience the place/apartment. Then the camera cuts to a medium shot of the kitchen and the lady and this can introduce or show the setting and the status of the family. Then the lady pours the tea in a cup and the camera cuts to a close up then an over the shoulder shot suggesting that we are about to see something and it also shows the other part of the apartment – creating tension and enigma in the audience. The camera then cuts to a high angle and an extreme close up of the woman’s face looking terrified and scared and then prays creating tension in the audience. Then the camera cuts to a low angle and slowly opens the door to reveal to the audience what it happening. The other woman standing upside down in the top corner of the wall and looking as if the devil has possessed her or something really bad happened to her. Then the camera cuts to the woman’s reaction and this is called a reaction shot. Then she screams very loud so the camera first shows the corridor then the stairs then the outer part of the apartment to show how loud her voice was. Then a yellow taxi crosses the camera and stops with the name of the city which is ‘angel city’ and this can suggest that the movie is about angels and supernatural things etc.
The camera then cuts to a low angle of the person in the taxi throwing his cigarette down in slow motion creating a sense of mystery. Then the camera cuts to an extreme close up of the cigarette on the floor and the camera then cuts to a high angle and the person from the taxi comes out suggesting that the protagonist is someone important and the audience want to know who he is then the camera cuts to a crane shot showing the place from above showing the setting which can suggest the status of the family living in this place. He also opens the door is a careless way which shows that he is fed up.

Then the camera cuts to the corridor and the camera forward tracks and from the main characters point of view. The protagonist is in the centre of the screen suggesting that he is superior and the main character. He acts in a very relaxed way suggesting that he knows what he is doing and then he whispers to the ladies ears (the one who is possesses) that he is Constantine so the audience can now figure out why the movie is called this name. This also can suggest that he is immorality and that the evil spirits all know who he is. He also speaks with the other people in their own language and this can suggest that he’s been used to foreign people. Constantine starts to give orders and everybody obeys him suggesting that he is superior and his status is important and above the others. The taxi driver pretends to be Constantine and this part creates a kind of humor to the audience. The colors are all dull but dirty bright which can suggest the time of day this drama is all happening in which is morning because the people are all wearing their pajamas and the lady was preparing breakfast. Also the main protagonist is wearing black to show that he is important and to make him stand out. The part in which the mirror does not go out of the window creates more tension and makes the audience wanting to continue to watch and sit on the edge of their chairs. Then it ends with the evil spirit out and dead and the girl who was possessed is back to normal. Then an extreme close up of Constantine looking relived that his job here is over.
